CARRERAS. After 94 memorable years, Launa Carreras passed away peacefully October 14, 2017, at Westminster Canterbury. Born in Boydton, Va., in 1923 to Percy A. and Pattie Lee Hightower, she moved to Richmond following graduation from high school. After business school, Launa enjoyed a varied career working as a bookkeeper at the Clover Room, Hanson & Hanson, Attorneys at Law, and LaFrance Cleaners. Most importantly, to those who knew Launa, she was a full-time mom, a full-time friend, a world traveler and a tireless volunteer. Launa was a joyous woman who dressed to the "nines" wherever she went, was an amazing dancer, grew flowers that thrived in the wrong temperate zone, and always found the positive in everyone she met. Launa's greatest joy was her family and she is survived by her son, William P. Hanson Jr. and his wife, Jennifer; daughter, Launa H. Kendle and husband, Allen; grandsons, Spencer A. Kendle and Andrew Parker Kendle; and her sisters, Barbara Hughey and Jacqueline Mayne. Launa is also survived by her stepson, James Phillip Carreras and his wife, Margaret; stepdaughter-in-law, Regina Carreras; the Carreras grandchildren, Elizabeth C. Benson and husband, Rod, J. Scott Carreras and wife, Maria and Brett S. Carreras; and four great-grandchildren. She was blessed with many nieces and nephews from the Hightower, Hanson and Carreras families, whom she dearly loved. The family would especially like to recognize her niece, Betty Sears and husband, Gerald for their kindness during Launa's last years. In addition to her parents, Launa was predeceased in 2006 by her loving husband of 18 years, J. Phillip Carreras; her brother, Percy Hightower; and sisters, Geraldine Hightower and Audrey Harris. She remained close to the Hanson family after the end of her first marriage to her children's father, William P. Hanson Sr., whom also predeceased her. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, October 21, at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Alzheimer's Association or Susan G. Komen Foundation.
