Carl Phillip Wallace
July 31, 1928 - October 12, 2017

Carl Phillip Wallace, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, October 12, 2017. He was 89 years old.
Carl P, as he was endearingly called, was born July 31, 1928 in Dothan, Alabama. He is the oldest of five children born to Ealie Phillip and Eudora Wallace. Carl P graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and matriculated to Alabama State. He not only excelled in academics but was a star on the gridiron as well. He later served his country with distinction as a member of the United States Navy. Carl married Ernestine Jackson on June 17, 1951 in Montgomery, Alabama and they raised a family of six children.
While in the Navy, he was stationed on the West Coast, so he moved his family to California. After Honorably Discharging from the Navy, he tried-out for a professional football team that had just been created in Los Angeles…The Chargers.
He did not make that team which in some ways may have been a blessing. Carl P realized his calling to strengthen and empower communities and youth. Throughout his life, you could find him planting seeds of hope, strength, wisdom, and success in others, helping them to grow beyond the confines of their circumstances. He worked for the Economic Opportunities Program (EOP) in the City of Los Angeles, he was the Executive Director for the EOP in the City of Long Beach and later, for the State of Florida. He was the Executive Director for the Skills, Training and Employment Project (STEP) in Los Angeles where he was instrumental in the development of programs to strengthen and mentor huge numbers of youth. After retirement, he eventually moved to the Fresno area and have called it home for the past 26 years.
He had a love for music; big band, swing, jazz, blues and gospel which he willingly shared. Word has it, he did a stint as a disc jockey; calling himself “The Fantabulous Diz Wallace”. His tag line, “sit back and relax as I bring you something old, something new, something bold, something blue…but its all, especially for you.” He was always so full of life.
In retirement, Carl P remained active. He served on the Trustee Board at Carter Memorial AME Church - Fresno, volunteered as a Docent leading tours at the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park just outside of Tulare, and he volunteered with the Fresno Unified School District as a Mentor in their Grandparents Program. He and his wife, Ernestine, were also Foster Parents to several children.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ernestine and his daughter, Carla Patrice. He is survived by his siblings Fred (Jayne) Wallace, Ed Wallace, Ethel Marie Jenkins and Ronald (Rene) Wallace. His legacy will continue to live on through his children, Reynaud, Rodney (Donnetha), Maya Thomas, Randall (Cynthia J), and Cynthia Moore.
He also leaves fourteen Grand Children, four Step-Grand Children, and twenty-seven Great-Grand Children and a host of extended family and Foster Children who lovingly call him Dad, Pop or Papa.
Carl P,
We Love You
