William N Saunders Jr was born at Anson County, NC in Oct 1820. His parents were Sabra/"Saby" and William N Saunders Sr.

Family lore says that William N Saunders Jr "ran away from Florida and made his way to Texas". Nothing seems further from the truth revealed by the records. William N Saunders Jr wasn't from Florida, but from Anson County, NC. And he didn't "run away"; he and another Saunders--Kinchen--(just two years older, but seemingly--per census records--not a brother) were deployed in FL during the Second Florida Seminole Indian War. By 7 Dec 1840, Kinchen was First Lieutenant and William was Sergeant in Captain Albert Oliver's 1st Florida Mounted Volunteers assigned to Camp Oliver on the Okloknee (sic Ochlockonee) River, at Leon County, FL (near Tallahassee). William and Kinchen survived, though many involved in the war died of disease.

After the war, both William and Kinchen married at Leon County, FL. Kincheon and his wife Emma (Manning) Saunders moved to Grimes County, TX by 1850. William seemed to have more difficulty marrying. On 1 Jan 1844, William wed Margaret R Switzer at Leon County, FL, but on the 5th of May that same year, Margaret married a different husband (Samuel W Meeks) implying a quick divorce from William.

William may have been more circumspect about his second marriage. On 15 May 1847, William married Georgia Amanda Davis, the daughter of Simeon Davis and Elizabeth (Allday) Carpenter Davis. Georgia, b 1830 @ Leon County, FL, was the middle of three Davis children. Her father, Simeon Davis, had owned a 757 acre plantation at what is now the Forestmeadows Park and Athletic Center (7 miles due N of Tallahassee on N Meridian Road). But on 15 Nov 1833, Simeon died. His widow, Elizabeth, then moved the family (composed of four Carpenter children--Margean (21), Richad Bailey Carpener (18), Albert (13) and Elizabeth (12)--and three Davis children--Samuel (5 or 6), Georgia (3) and newborn Susie) to the "silk-sock" district of Bradfordville, FL approximately 6 miles NE of Simeon's plantation. Yet all was not bliss. In 1848, William's wife Georgia died in childbirth at the age of 18. She and her mother Elizabeth were buried at Bradforville's Mt Zion Methodist Episcopal Cemetery, the site of a 1991 Florida State archaeological survey which unearth their headstones, confirming almost 150 years of family lore.

Though once divorced, and now widowed, William N Saunders did not leave Florida. He remained near the Davises and on 27 Feb 1850, he and Susie Davis, Georgia's younger sister, married. They were censused in 1850 at Leon County, Fl with Susie's mother Elizabeth.

By 1858 when Susie's mother Elizabeth died (2 Oct 1858), William and Susie had three Florida-born children. The first they named for Susie's sister/Willam's deceased wife

1) Georgia Elizabeth (Saunders) Fowler (~1852 - bef 1874)

2) Mary J Grace "Gracy" (Saunders) Hughes (~1855 - aft 1880)

3) And a son, William Samuel Davis Saunders (18 Feb 1858 - 12 Jan 1939). WSD "Willow" Saunders was named William for his father, and SAMUEL DAVIS Saunders, presumably for Susie's brother who appears to have died in his teens before 1850.

No longer tied to Florida (Susie was the only surviving Davis child) William moved his family from from Leon County, FL to Grimes County, TX, where Kinchen Saunders had settled in 1850. Once in Grimes County, Texas William and Susie had four more Saunders children:

4) Simeon J "Sim" (b ~1862 at Grimes County, TX; last listed as a Grimes County school teacher in 1880). "Sim" was clearly named for the father Susie never knew.

5) Robert Edward "Lee" Saunders (b 6 Aug 1863 at the height of the Civil War - 5 Apr 1898). Lee married Sarah "Sallie" Gertrude (Harrison). Although they had four children (2 boys and 2 girls), only their second son Grady Harrison Saunders survived infancy. In the 1950s, an over 50 Grady married his almost 50 year old first cousin, Sara "Eleanor" (Harrison). The couple had no children. Grady's father Robert E Lee Saunders died 4 Apr 1898 and, like Grady and family, was buried at Oakland Cemetery in Navastoa, just yards from Lee's older brother, William Samuel Davis Saunders.

6) Mable "Beulah" (Saunders) Fuqua (Sep 1868 - 1923) married Samuel "Simon" Fuqua at Grimes County on 6 Mar 1889. The couple had three daughters and two sons before Beulah's death in 1923 at Erwin, Grimes County, Texas.

7) John "Cecil" Saunders (Jun 1869 - bef 1910). JC married Anna L Tirade on 14 Apr 1897 and is not known to have had any children. John Cecil died sometime after the 1900 census, perhaps at Brownwood, Texas.

Of William N Saunders Jr's seven children, only two--Beulah (Saunders) Fuqua, and William Samuel Davis Saunders--had surviving children.

The location of William N Saunders Jr's grave is unknown. He was recorded on the 1900 census living with his son William Samuel Davis Saunders at Navasota, TX. On this census alone (a mistake?), William N Saunders Jr lists his mother as born in North Carolina and his father as born in Germany whereas, in 1880, William had listed his father as born in NC and had left his mother's place of birth blank)...
