John Monroe was born on January 5, 1883 in Gilmer, Texas to J.B. Houghton and Laura Monroe Payne. He worked for various Railroads in the western states employed as both a Fireman and as a Brakeman. His Northern Pacific Railway application from September 9, 1910 lists he had a wife Louise and was living in Pasco, Washington (noted his mother was still living in Lake Arthur New Mexico). His application stated he was born in Amarillo Texas, his World War II draft card stating Gilmer, Texas. His railroad records also indicate he went by the last name Howton often misspelled as Horton as well as Houghton prior to 1910. His Social Security Application lists his father's first name as John. He died in the Rural town of Hondo in Los Angeles County. His death certificate (File # 1557) lists he was a house painter by trade; divorced, and his wife's name was Mamie.
