Born Dec. 8, 1930 in Lewistown the son of the late Vernon M. Ferguson and Yettie (Harbst) Ferguson, he was a 1949 graduate of Lewistown High School and concluded his stellar wrestling career representing the Panthers in the District 6 Championship, a first for Mifflin County.
He graduated from Shippensburg State Teachers College and pursued his dream to educate children, commencing a profession as a teacher and administrator which spanned six decades and touched countless lives.
Upon retirement, Vernon and Audrey faithfully attended First Baptist Church of Juniata County.
Vernon will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Audrey and his children, Vernon Jr. (Jeaneann), Cathy (Rick) Roark and Gretchen (Henry) Polczer. His legacy will continue through his five grandchildren, Vernon III, Nathaniel, Melissa, Audra and Lucian II, and by his 12 great-grandchildren — Chance, Cameron, Chloe, Andrew, Angel, Mason, Madelyn, Liam, Bennett, Lucian III, Zane and Dakota. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary (Ferguson) Duncan.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 at the Barr Funeral Home and Crematory 120 Logan St., Lewistown with Rev. Ronald Shupe officiating. There will be a time of visitation with family from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday evening from at the funeral home.
