Von Nester Smith passed away September 19, 2017 at the age of 92. Von was born December 9, 1924 in Goble, Oregon to Thomas and Icy Smith.

Von grew up in Neer City, Oregon where he graduated from Rainier High School in 1943. After graduation, Von enlisted in the U. S. Navy where he served as a Naval photographer on an aircraft carrier during World War II.

In 1946 Von came home and started Columbia Photo Service on the family property, where he did photo finishing and portraits for all of Columbia County. The studio was opened continuously except for the 16 months during the Korean Conflict when, as an inactive member of the Naval reserve, he was whisked away to take photographs again, this time stationed in Japan.

In 1950 Von married Liz Anderson of St. Helens. This last February they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Along with photography, Von enjoyed hunting, gardening and growing vegetables to sell at their veggie stand in front of their photo studio. He prided himself in selling the best sweet corn around.

Von is survived by his wife, Liz, along with numerous nieces and nephews and a community that he loved.

A Celebration of Life will be held October 28, 2017 at the St. Helens Elks Lodge from 12-3 pm.

Family interment will be at 10:00 am at Bethany Memorial Cemetery.
