Civil War veteran, wounded at Gettysburg. He enlisted at Rochester, New York, in August of 1862, joining the 140th Regiment, New York Volunteers, and serving until June of 1865. He married Emily Kerr (1844-1879) and in 1868 they had a daughter, Jennie. In 1881, after Emily's death, he married Henrietta Himmel (1851-1919). They had three children, Helen (b. 1882), Walter (b. 1886), and Clara (b. 1888). At the time of his enlistment in 1862, Walter Cherry was described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall with blue eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion. He made a living first as a railroad fireman and then as a railroad engineer. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Engineers and regularly participated in reunions of of the 140th Regiment.
