Obituary

Thomas John McAllister, 83, of Darnestown, MD passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017. He was the loving and devoted husband to Grace Ann McAllister.

Surviving along with his wife are is brother, Robert McAllister of New Haven, CT, four children, Thomas M. McAllister, of Clarksburg, MD, Joseph McAllister of New Market, Maryland, Daniel McAllister of Lancaster, PA, and Lynda Rivera of Burke, VA; 14 grandchildren, Kevin, Andrew, Matthew, Mary Grace, Meghan, Kelly, Patrick, Thomas, Luke, Casey, and Katherine McAllister, and William and Elizabeth Knapp, Isabella Rivera and two great grandchildren, Savannah and Magnolia McAllister.

Born on June 13, 1934, in Scranton, PA, Thomas was the oldest of four children of the late Mary and Thomas McAllister.

In his early years, Thomas was an active member of the church serving as an alter server at St. Ann’s Parish in Scranton, PA. He was an excellent student and was given the superlative “Tinker Tom” by his graduating class; a nickname that stuck with him the rest of his life. He also spend many years as a Boy Scout dedicated to serving his community.

After graduation from St. Ann’s High School, Thomas enlisted in the United States Army in the summer of 1952 serving during the Korean War as part of the Signal Corps. He received several medals of honor to include: The National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and The Good Conduct Medal.

During his time in the Army, Thomas met his wife, Grace McAloon, on New Year’s Eve, 1955 and they were married later that year at St. John’s Catholic Church in Scranton, PA.

After their marriage and while waiting for the birth of their second child, Thomas joined IBM in September 1957 as a field engineering student at the IBM Command Control Center where he was at the cutting edge of the commercial computer industry. He took pride in his work leaving behind a legacy of impactful projects such as the CityNet program, for which he was the lead network engineer designing the computer network system for the City of New York. Over the years, his expertise and reputation in the computer industry earned him many awards and accolades. He retired from Boeing Computer Services at the age of 62.

Thomas was an avid angler spending many patient hours teaching his children and grandchildren how to fish. He also loved and supported the Boston Red Sox even before they were a winning team.

He was a quiet and loving man who was dedicated to his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by many.

The family will be holding a memorial mass on Friday, October 20, 2017 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church, 17230 Tom Fox Avenue, Poolesville, MD 20837. Inurnment to follow at the Monocacy Cemetery; 19801 West Hunter Road, Beallsville, MD 20839.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations go to Casey House: Montgomery Hospice.
