In the later 1830s, Seymour Garey moved his family (including children from two marriages) to Texas, purchasing land in San Felipe de Austin. Not long after, they sold their land and relocated to a ranch in what became DeWitt County, Texas. There, they lived for 30+ years, during which his second wife, Anna Kingsbury, passed away as well as two of the younger children. A son from his first marriage, Elijah, was killed in Dawsons Massacre in 1842 near San Antonio,Texas. At least one of the older children eventually returned to the Northeast, living in New York.
In 1874, following a desire to visit family and friends of his youth, Seymour traveled to Pennsylvania, where he succumbed to an illness and the stress of his long journey. Family tradition reports that he was buried in Upper Fassett Cemetery, marked with a stone in which his initials SG were carved.
