Vera J. Lombard, 99, of North Gorham Road, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at her residence. She was born Aug. 20, 1910, the daughter of Harold and Clara Durgin Haley.
Peggy went to school in Durgintown in the schoolhouse which her grandfather built. She attended Bridgton Academy. Peggy worked in fashion design in New York City and spent many years working as a housekeeper, the last of them at St. Joseph College.
Peggy married William Lombard and they celebrated 50 years of marriage before his death in 1982. Peggy was the first radio operator for the North Gorham Fire Department and was active in the Grange and the library as well as the Hiram Historical Society in her earlier years.
She was an expert crewel worker, as well as a great lover of nature and especially loved her birds. Peggy was a devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed family gatherings. She was devoted to everyone in her family and they to her.
Besides her husband, Peggy was predeceased by her sons, William D. Lombard II and David Lee Lombard.
Survivors include her daughters, Sandra L. Moses and her husband Leigh of Southington, Conn., and Sharon Brooks and her husband Edwin of North Gorham; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham, from 1-2 p.m., where a funeral service will follow at 2 p.m.
Burial will take place in North Gorham Cemetery, Gorham.
