Melissa Heen Peterson, 44, of Alexandria died Monday, October 24th at her home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Friday, October 28th at Church of St. Mary in Willmar, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Melissa Anne was born March 24, 1972, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the daughter of David L. and Mary L. (Mattson) Heen. She grew up in Clara City, where she attended elementary school and graduated from MACCRAY High School in the Class of 1990. During her high school years, Melissa was a cheerleader and was crowned 1st Princess for Soy Bean Days. After high school, she moved to Willmar and attended Willmar Community College, earning her AA Degree in 1992. On May 11, 1996, Melissa was united in marriage to Brian Peterson at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. To this union two daughters were born: Anna Marie and Emily Anne. Following their marriage, they lived in St. Peter until 2007, when they moved to Alexandria. Melissa worked as a financial worker for Pope County.

Melissa was baptized and confirmed at St. Clara’s Catholic Church in Clara City. She was member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria, where she had been involved with Crossroads of Friendship Program, served as a song leader, summer Bible school teacher and youth group leader.

Melissa loved her girls and enjoyed the time they spent together. She also enjoyed photography, animals, writing in her journal, hot baths, evening walks and flowers.

Surviving are her daughters: Anna Marie and Emily Anne. Also surviving is her mother, Mary Heen and several aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, father, David Heen, in 2010 and brother, Jeffrey in 1991.
