Athlete. Spencer W. Gore was an English athlete, born in Wimbledon, London, England. He won the first Wimbledon Lawn Tennis championship played on July 19, 1877. He beat his opponent, William Marshall, in three sets. As the first player to use the volley, he is credited with creating the technique. The following year, he lost the Wimbledon championship to Frank Hadow. He never competed at Wimbledon again, however, he continued to play first class cricket until 1879.
