Bernice Smith went to the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 8th in Omro, WI. She was born on February 16, 1922 in Comstock, Michigan and currently lived in Omro, Wisconsin. Bernice attended the Chicago Evangelistic Institute with her husband, Bill, and there met her long-time friend Harriett Johnson. Bernice had no children, however she was known as "Mummy Smith" to over 100 children during her 35 year career as a home service provider for mentally challenged children. Together with her best friend, Harriett, they created The Smith Home in California. In 1993 they retired and moved to Wisconsin to be near their family. Bernice is survived by her best friend, Harriet, her sister, Wilma Kannegieter, and many nieces and nephews in Michigan, Wisconsin and California. She touched many lives through her willingness to invite people into her home to learn about Jesus. For over 40 years Bernice and Harriett hosted bible studies in their home. Harriett will continue to carry on her legacy of bible study in their home. Family, friends and loved ones are welcome to attend a visitation at the Kwiatkowski Funeral Home located at 425 Jefferson Avenue in Omro on Sunday, August 11th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Lakeview Memorial Park, 2786 Algoma Blvd. in Oshkosh on Monday, August 12th with a visitation at 10:00 a.m. and service at 11:00 a.m. Bernice was loved by many and will be missed by all.
