Stephen French Richards Sr., 96, of Madison Heights, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, October 13, 2017, at Fairmont Crossing. He was born on October 1, 1921, to the late William French Richards Sr. and Gertrude Homeyer Richards. In his early years he was active at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Lynchburg. For over 50 years he has been a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe where he served as a Deacon and an Usher and served wherever needed. Stephen is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nellie; four children, Stephen F. Richards Jr., George R. Richards and wife, Pam, Barbara Sue Nelson and husband, Bill, and W. Kenley Richards; three grandchildren, Sarah Richards, James Richards and wife, Cassie, and Amanda Richards; one great- granddaughter, Rylee Richards; one brother, George T. Richards; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, William F. Richards Jr. and wife, Blanche; and one sister, Anna Gale Game and husband, Bob. Stephen graduated from E.C. Glass High School, class of 1941. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in the European Theatre in World War II. Following his military service he was employed by C&P Telephone Company for 38 years as an installer/repairman. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at First Baptist Church of Monroe, 139 Francis Ave., Monroe, VA 24574. Relatives and friends are welcome for visitation at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg, Va. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Monroe Building Fund or to the charity of your choice. Diuguid Funeral Service & Crematory, Wiggington Rd.
