Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A United States Army officer since 1820, his Civil War service began as Lieutenant Colonel of the 7th United States Regular Infantry. As a Colonel, he commanded the 8th United States Regular Infantry and later Camp Butler Military Prison in Springfield, Illinois. He retired from the regular Army in the rank of Colonel in 1863 and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "long and faithful services".
