Elizabeth Duncan birth circa 1781 - death circa 1860 daughters of William and Anne Kornegay Duncan. Polly married Benjamin BOWDEN / BOURDEN; January 20 1798 Duplin County North Carolina Benjamin was the son of Samuel and Catherine Bowden of Isle of Wright County Virginia.

Elizabeth DUNKAN Bourden is mentioned as daughter in will of William DUNKAN, signed 7 Oct 1806, Duplin County, NC, original wills in the NC State Archives. She was bequeathed a negro named Lucey and "other things I have given her, estimated at $200." "Genealogical Abstracts of Duplin Co. NC Wills 1730-1860" by Murphy, pages 45-46. 151. Samuel BOURDEN was granted 320 acres of land on 11 December 1770, by the Royal Governor, William Tryon. (#2596,
page 592, Book 20) His grant was located.... "in Duplin on the N. side of Goshen Swamp and E. side of Bear Marsh, ). The foregoing land grant tells us that Samuel had relocated from Isle of Wight County, VA., to Duplin County, NC, sometime prior to 1770. Samuel was made a Capt. of the county militia and as such was responsible for the security and administration of the 8th District in the northern part of Duplin.
Benjamin BOWDEN received a gift deed from his father, Samuel, for 285 acres of land referred to as the "Weston Place", previously purchased by Samuel from Reuben WESTON. The property is described as being on the upper side of Spring Branch and joining the drains of Bear Marsh Swamp and Jesse Swinson's land (or, on the north side of Goshen Swamp and the east side of Bear Marsh Branch). The deed was dated 18 Jan 1802, proved Jan 1803, and recorded in Duplin County Deed Bk. N, p.79; witnessed by Francis OLIVER and Levin WATKINS.

On 2 May 1818, Benjamin BOWDEN sold to William HERRING for $170. a tract of 140 acres on the N. side of Goshen Swamp near the head of Bear Marsh, it being part of a survey of 500 acres granted originally to his uncle, Baker BOURDEN, by patent from the Royal Governor, Josiah Martin, 29 Oct 1774; (Deed Bk. DTUF, p. 453, Duplin County, NC), witnessed by Henry BOWDEN and Bryan BOWDEN. Bond for the marriage of Benjamin and Elizabeth DUNCKAN was Isaac Spence (Benjamin's brother in law).

According to "The Wilmington Journal" of 8 Nov 1860, "Benjamin Bowden died 30 Oct 1860, at his residence in Sampson County. He was aged 83 years".

Benjamin's home was located about midway between Newton Grove and Clinton, NC, 7 mile South of Newton Grove and 11 miles North of Clinton. The Goshen Swamp branches on to Sutton Town in Sampson County, not far from where Benjamin's two story home was remodeled in 1975.

After Benjamin died, the land was divided among the heirs, and the home place is now owned by Rose Cecelia Bowden Casey, great granddaughter of Benjamin. Rose and Richard Casey are the parents of Dixie Casey Sinclair. Dixie Sinclair, great, great, granddauther of Benjamin, revealed that Benjamin's 2nd wife's name was Mary Brewer.
