Leslie Gordon Buckley, 83, passed peacefully at his Wilmington home on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017.
Born on Jan. 20, 1934 in Wilmington, he was the son of the late Karl and Elsie (Fisher) Buckley.
In his early years, Leslie developed an interest in biology that stated from exploring the Lytle Creek environment behind his home on Peterson Place. A 1951 graduate of Wilmington High School, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and later graduated from Florida Southern University.
After college he worked for the St. Petersburg Health Department, returning home to Wilmington. He was affiliated with the Buckley Bros. Mill, farmed, was active with Community Action Meals on Wheels and retired from Head Start as a bus monitor.
Leslie loved dogs, cats and all animals. He was very well-read and had a fondness for the classics.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Hannelore (Marzluff) Buckley. Also left to cherish his memory is one son, Leslie Wayne (Karen) Buckley, of Wilmington; grandchildren, Alex and Craig Buckley; and sisters-in-law, Virginia Buckley and Sigrid Carter.
Leslie is preceded in death by two brothers, Jim Buckley and Bruce Buckley; and sisters-in-law, Nancy Buckley and Marianne Petersen.
Memorial contributions are welcome to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) or the Clinton County Humane Society.
Burial will take place at Sugar Grove Cemetery at a later date.
