Suzanne Phillips, 94, of Scranton, Pa., passed away on Oct. 2, 2017, at home with her daughter, Terri, at her side. She was the daughter of the late Charles Gimbar and Mary Rosul and born in Pittston, Pa. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Leroy J. Phillips.
Suzanne graduated from Dunmore High School, attended the Pratt Institute of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the University of Scranton. She retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Revenue as a revenue investigator.
A firm believer in making her community a better place, she was politically active as vice-chairwoman of the 112th legislative district for 18 years and campaigned with many candidates of the Democratic Party both locally and statewide and was voted to represent Lackawanna County for two terms as Democratic State Committee-person.
She was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Auxiliary and was recipient of the Jaycette Award. She created the Teenage Division of the March of Dimes and raised thousands of dollars for the fight against birth defects and was recipient of the Basil O'Connor Award from the National Foundation of the March of Dimes for Distinguished Voluntary Leadership.
Suzanne was a board member of the Scranton Philharmonic, later to become the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, for a total of 20 years. She spearheaded the Philharmonic Women's League and participated in rehearsal and concert night activities as social chairwoman and fundraising campaign chairwoman.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Daniel Kazmierski for his guidance and care during Suzanne's time of need and to Traditional Home Health and Hospice and to Mihwa Tilberry and Megan Mileuv for the loving care they provided at the final stages of her life.
She was preceded in death by her son, LeRoy Phillips Jr., in 1971; and is survived by her daughter, Terri; grandchildren, Lynne and husband, Leo Flores, of Woodland, Calif.; Eric Modzelesky, Scranton; and Alexis Modzelesky, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and a great-grandson, Leo Jr.
Private services and burial were held Oct. 4, 2017, at Cathedral Cemetery of Scranton.
Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton.
