Television Screenwriter. He was best known for his work (along with partner Bob Weiskopf) on such popular television shows as "I Love Lucy" and "All in the Family". He attended the University of California-Los Angeles and while there, wrote a humor column for the college newspaper called "Bob Tales". He later served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II and wrote for the Stars and Stripes newspaper. After the war, he first got a job, writing advertising copy, and later, went to work in radio. In radio, he wrote scripts for shows starring Abbott and Costello, Mel Blanc, and Jimmy Durante and for the shows "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet", "December Bride", "Duffy's Tavern", and "Our Miss Brooks". In 1953, he first met Bob Weiskopf and they would go on to develop into a award-winning writing team for various television series. They would go on to work on such television shows as "I Love Lucy", "Make Room for Daddy", "The Bob Cummings Show", "The Ann Sothern Show", "Pete and Gladys", "The Lucy Show", "The Red Skelton Show", "The Good Guys", "The Phyllis Diller Show", "The Carol Burnett Show", "The Flip Wilson Show", "All in the Family", "Maude", and "Archie Bunker's Place". They were awarded for their work with six Emmy nominations and two Emmy Award wins (for "All in the Family" and "The Flip Wilson Show"). They also earned several other awards during their career. He retired after the 1988 Writers' Guild Association strike.
