Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in New York he established a law practice in that state before moving to Chicago, Illinois to practice law there. When the Civil War began he was instrumental in the recruitment of the 51st Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and on October 15, 1861 he was commissioned its Colonel and commander. Assigned to the Army of the Mississippi under Major General John Pope, he took part in the February 1862 Battle of New Madrid, in the capture of the strategic Island No. 10 in the Mississippi River, and the investiture of Fort Pillow. Commended by his superiors for his handling of a small brigade in the operations, his command was then assigned the forces under Major General Henry W. Halleck. He led the 51st Illinois during the April-May 1862 Siege of Corinth,Mississippi, and continued in the field until sickness compelled him to resign on September 30, 1862. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the operations before and the capture of the enemy's forces at Island No. 10, in the Mississippi River". He eventually settled in Newark, New Jersey, where he set up a law practice, and passed away in 1877.
