Lois M. (Layh) Adams passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs, NE with her family by her side.
She was born May 4, 1936 in Lakeview, SD. She was the second daughter born to John and Clara (Burfiend) Layh. She attended her early elementary school in St. Francis, SD. The family then moved to Gregory, SD where she completed the rest of her school years and graduated in 1955.
She married the love of her life Donald E. Adams on August 30, 1958. They moved to Cody, where they built a life together. Two children, John and Mardi were welcomed into their family. Don & Lois spent their entire lives living in Cody until 2015, when they moved to Prairie Pines in Chadron due to health reasons. Lois endured many hardships in her life, and never once complained.
She was a proud member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She participated in a prayer group where reciting the rosary became her signature. She was also a member of the St. Mary’s Altar Society. Lois was also an active member of the Cody American Legion Auxiliary for the past 57 years. Lois had many interests. She loved making her infamous chokecherry jelly, was an avid reader, and loved watching sports of any kind. She was a true Husker fan, and enjoyed watching her Rockies and Cubs. Most of all, Lois shared a love of basketball with her grandson, Kyle. It did not matter high school, college, or Pro. She loved her basketball.
Throughout her life, Lois was always dedicated to her family. You could never have a conversation with Lois without the mention of her four grandchildren. She loved to watch them compete in whatever activity they were a part of and was always in the front row whenever she was able to usually wearing a sweater emblazoned with one of their names on the front and number one fan on the back.
But more importantly than that, Lois was always there for her grandchildren when they weren’t competing in the spotlight. She was always willing to spend her entire Sunday afternoon talking to them on the phone about things that weren’t going right, she would send prayers to St. Anthony clear across the country in hopes to help them find lost things, and she would even humor her grandson’s wishes to try spinach from a can like Popeye and then clean up the mess afterwards when he decided it wasn’t worth it after just one bite.
Lois loved her family and cherished every minute she had with them whether it was for a fifteen-minute conversation on the phone or a week’s vacation in Florida. This was especially apparent during her last two years of life. Even when she had difficulty getting out of bed most days, she would stare at all of the pictures of family surrounding her and recite the names of her children, grandchildren, and now most importantly, her two great-granddaughters, Addison and Randi. Never once did her love for them waver.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara Layh, and one sister Orvilla Drey and brother-in-law, Kenny Drey.
Lois is survived by her husband, Donald, son John and wife Colette of Melbourne FL, and daughter Mardi and husband, Russell Milton of Cody and four grandchildren, Ashley (Ryan) Bailey, Carmen (Jake) Brown, Alisha Adams, and Kyle (Haley) Milton and two beautiful great-granddaughters, Addison and Randi.
Lois will be extremely missed by not only her family, but all who knew her.
