Betty was a longtime member of Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church. She was a children's Sunday school teacher for many years. She and her husband Andy prepared their famous goulash for Wednesday night church suppers many times. She was a wonderful, devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a "favorite" aunt to her nieces and nephews.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Brenda Dozier and husband Allen; granddaughter, Nicole Kelly and husband Patrick. She is also survived by four sisters, Alice Vavadelis, Becky Jo Sykes, Doris Carpenter, Linda Upton and husband Sammy; a brother, R. William Smith and wife Judy; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Smith; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Howard T. Gillette and wife Ann, Robert Smith, James R. Smith Jr. and brother-in-law, Peter Vavadelis.
A celebration of Betty's life will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, with Dr. Paul Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church, 5520 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA 23509.
