Flight Sergeant John Macmillan, R.A.F.V.R., Service No. 1366232, was serving with 106 Squadron Bomber Command, at the time operating Lancaster Bombers from RAF Syerston, near Newark, Nottinghamshire, England. On the evening of Friday 25th June 1943, he took off as Air Bomber aboard Lancaster I W4367, part of a 473 bomber raid, (Operation Gelsenkirchen), against oil refineries near Dusseldorf. The aircraft was shot down at 0106hrs Saturday 26th June by a German night fighter approx 10Km south west of Urk in the IJselmeer, Netherlands. All the crew were killed. He is buried in Amsterdam New Eastern Cemetery, Noord-Holland, Netherlands, plot 69, row B, where his grave is marked by a CWGC stone.
