Our beloved Susan went home to the arms of the Good Shepherd. Her head is laid upon the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She has joined the angels and saints in Heaven. She was born October 11, 1946 in Waco, Texas to the late Mitchell and Jimmie Bukala. She is survived by her brother, Mitchell Bukala, Jr. and sister, Mary Gail Bukala, a niece, Katie Bukala and nephews, Drew Bearden (Blanca) and Lee Bearden and great-nieces Hannah and Allie Bearden She is also survived by dearest friends, Bonita Pearce and Josie Huizar and their families. She was preceded in death by her lifelong friend, Chesney Thomas.

After graduating from Reicher Catholic High School, Susan attended Texas Tech where she earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree in English. Miss Bukala began her lifelong career in Catholic education at St. Louis Catholic School in Waco, Texas. She moved to San Antonio where she taught three years at St. Benedict's Catholic School, 20 years as a 3rd grade teacher at St. Margaret Mary's Catholic School and became Principal there for four years while completing her Master's degree at St. Mary's University in Catholic Education Administration. Susan became Vice Principal at St. Luke's Catholic School in 2002 for three years before retiring due to health issues.

After selflessly educating and encouraging scores of young people, Susan retired from Catholic Education in 2005 after 36 years of service. Always seeking professionalism and continued knowledge in her profession, she was asked to become a member of the Institute for Animal Care and Use Committee, (IACUC) at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Susan also volunteered for six years in the St. Luke's Catholic School Library.

Evident by her efforts and involvement in schools, community involvement programs and professional organizations throughout her life, Susan always gave herself wholeheartedly to whatever she attempted to do. She will be thought of by her countless students and friends as a compassionate and devoted educator. A former student noted recently, that she remembered working on a language arts program and multiplication flashcards in Susan's 3rd grade class. "I always loved her class because she made learning so much fun and I incorporate that style in my teaching today."

The family and friends wish to thank the staff members of St. Gabriel's Hospice, Harbour Hospice and Oak Park Nursing Home.

A Memorial Rosary and Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Friday, October 13, at 2:00 P.M. at St. Luke Catholic Church, 4603 Manitou, San Antonio.

A private burial will take place in Waco, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to St. Luke Catholic School’s Library or the charity of your choice.
