Melissa was the elderst child of Ira and Mary (Robirds)Kirby. At nearly eight years of age, Melissa was helping make lye soap outside, in a kettle over the fire with her mother, Mary Angeline. Sadly, her dress caught on fire, and she ran, with her brother Lambert attempting to catch her and help put out the blaze. Sadly for all, they lost little Melissa in the horrible accident.
