Hot Springs, Arkansas

Marian Elouise Pool was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 14, 1918.

Her mother, Elouise Hinton McGhee Pool died of diabetes when Marian was 5, and her Dad, Thomas Marion Pool, moved his three pre-schoolers, Marian Elouise, Tom Jr.,("Boo"), and Jerry to Hot Springs. He met a wonderful woman, Pearl Orr Dewitt at Central Baptist church who had two children, Bette DeWitt Mills, & Dorothy DeWitt Campbell, and they married and had three more, Charlene Pool Nelson Erdosey, Patricia Pool Johnson, and Barbara Pool Halbert. It was the original 'yours, mine, and ours' family. Marian loved her new family and grew very close to all her adopted cousins. She said she was lucky to have had two mothers.

Marian graduated from Ouachita Baptist College, working and paying her own way as secretary to the president of the college. She married Harold Monroe Henderson, the brother of her best friend, Juanita Henderson Wilson, and they had two children, Nancy E Henderson Frith and Douglas H Henderson, during World War II. When the children were 3 and 5, Marian went back to school and got her Masters degree in Literature, writing her thesis on Shakespeare.

She taught elementary school in Hot Springs at Gardner, Jones, Greenwood, and Ramble schools. She taught Math and Literature at the Community College. She volunteered for the American Red Cross and for the Girl Scouts teaching swimming and life saving. She taught sunday school, directed the youth choir, and sang many solos in the First Christian Church choir, She also sang with the Hot Springs Choral Club, and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival Chorus, and she taught piano lessons after school.

She and Harold moved to Fort Smith, after the children were grown, where he worked as a Postal Service Officer. They retired back to Hot Springs, building their dream home out at Meadow Creek near Royal. Harold died in 1987.

Marian got a love of sports and outdoor activities from her Dad, who played ball with his gang of children every evening. She used to take classrooms on nature walks, teaching them the names of all the trees and flowers, while hiking up one of our mountains. When she was about 40, she began walking for an hour a day rain or shine, usually going about three miles. She said it made her feel good and helped her to sleep.

Her favorite hobby was travel. She loved seeing other places. She and Harold would take long vacations each summer with the children, camping in a tent to save money. They saw most of the National parks in the US, All 50 states, and went fishing in Canada. After the children were grown, they went to the holy land, all over Europe, and to Mexico. After Harold died, she and Nancy toured New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Yellowstone, Central Europe, Alaska, and the Panama Canal. She and Doug toured the UK and Ireland, and she took her granddaughter, Laura on a cruise to Norway. She always wanted to see China, but never made it there. She traveled often to Alaska, usually timing it so that she could take part in the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival.
Marian never liked cooking. For example, she made spaghetti by opening a can of Chef Boyardee. But she always made sure her meals had a protein, a green vegetable, a yellow vegetable and a starch. Her mother's sister, 'Aunt Tot', taught her that, and Tot was a fanatic for washing hands and teeth, which Marian also adopted. She adopted that amazing sweet smile from her dad.

Doug now lives in Virginia and Nancy lives in Alaska. Their children are scattered all over the US and UK. Marian has loved her 9 grandchildren, Steve, Rich, James H., David, James F, & Laura, and 2 step-grandchildren,Natalie and Bill. She leaves 7 great grandchildren, Richey, Brittini, Haley, David A., Tenely, Dylan, and Bennett; and two great-great grandchildren,Trey, and Aiden. She was very much loved by countless nieces and nephews, and her three surviving sisters, Charlene, Patricia, and Barbara.
Marian is preceded in death by her husband Harold Monroe Henderson, grandson David Douglas Frith, both her mothers, her father, and sisters Bette and Dorothy Ann.

Funeral arrangements are being made with Gross funeral home in Hot Springs. A Memorial Celebration of her life will be held at First Christian Church, 1806 Central Avenue Hot Springs, Arkansas, with Pastor Steve Willis officiating at 1:00 pm, Saturday May 2nd, 2014.
