John V. Souza, 72, of 266 Oak St., a licensed practical nurse for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health at the Taunton State Hospital for 2 4years before retiring 15 years ago, died Saturday at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Bertha G. (Dimond) Anderson-Souza.
Born in Swansea, a son of the late Manuel and Louisa (Fernandes) Souza, he lived there all his life.
Mr. Souza previously operated the family dairy farm for many years. He served as a dog officer and animal inspector for the town and was at one time the town auctioneer.
Besides his wife he leaves an adopted son, Charles F. Anderson of Salem, N.H.; a stepson, George R. Anderson of Vacaville, Calif.; a brother, Joseph Souza of Swansea; two sisters, Alice Bernier of Swansea and Margaret Kilduff of Seekonk; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, with a funeral Mass at 10 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Gardeners Neck Road. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Warren.
