Betty Carolyn Dawson was born in Rector, Arkansas to Hubert and Edith Robertson Dawson. The family moved to Santa Clara, CA when she was 9. Betty graduated from Jefferson Union Elementary, Santa Clara High and San Jose State College. She then completed a one-year residency in Medical Technology at O'Connor Hospital in San Jose. She completed 41 years in her field as a microbiologist at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose.
She met Jimmy J "Jim" Moates at a Rebekah social event in 1970. They were then married on November 11, 1972, after he returned from his last tour of duty in Vietnam and retirement from the United States Army. He preceded her in death on November 13, 1982.
Betty presided over the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies in 1989 after serving the organization in other offices and committee appointments. She presided over the Rebekah Assembly of California in 1975, again after serving the organization in other offices and committee appointments. She started her service in Rebekah-Oddfellowship through the Sigma Tau Theta Rho Girls' Club and then joined Sunnyvale Rebekah Lodge when she was 18. At her death she had been a member of various organizations within the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for more than 65 years.
Betty was an avid reader and thoroughly enjoyed music (she played the cello, clarinet, percussion instruments and the piano.) She also enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Hawaii and numerous trips to Europe, especially to Scandinavia (even though she detested eating fish), Australia, and New Zealand.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Jim Moates, parents Hubert and Edith Dawson, sister Martha Kay Orr, sister-in-law Mary Kay Dawson, and niece Vivian Garcia. She is survived by her brothers Donald Dawson, of Camarillo, CA, and Johnny Dawson (Pat) of San Jose; nephews Mark Dawson, Brien Dawson, and Gary Dawson; nieces Janette Statzer and Suzi Chase; 10 great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great niece. She is also survived by her long-time friend Elizabeth Mowry Harbstreit (Steve) of Kearney, MO. Betty will be greatly missed by her many friends from Rebekah-Oddfellowship throughout the world.
A celebration of life will be held on September 30, 2017, at 2 pm, in the Villas of Almaden Clubhouse,5941 Dry Oak Dr, San Jose. Attendees should use the entrance from Meridian Avenue.
Memorial donations may be made to the Rebekah Children's Home Building Fund, PO Box 637, Gilroy CA 95201.
