NORMAN L MERRELL, Missouri State Senator, was born April 12, 1924, near Williamstown, Lewis County, Missouri.
Merrill graduated from Culver-Stockton College (B.S., business administration and economics); University of Colorado, Boulder (Masters in business education). He served three years in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools for 21 years.
He owned and operated farms in Lewis County; was a member of the Christian Church; American Legion; AF & AM; Royal Arch Masons; Knight Templar Commandery and Shrine. He and his wife, Carlene, had two children, Linda Ann Rutledge and Terry Orr, five grandchildren.
Merrill, a Democrat, was elected to the Missouri Senate in 1970, reelected 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986 and 1990. Died in office on June 14, 1994. He served three term as Senate President Pro Tem.: 1977-1983. In 1984, Merrill unsuccessful sought the Democrat nomination for Governor.
