Gary Block, 72, Parsons, passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 15, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on October 14, 1943 at Sarcoxie, Mo., to Hobert Otto and Gertrude (Broam) Block. He grew up at Sarcoxie and attended schools there graduating from Sarcoxie High School in 1961.

He worked in flower nurseries near Sarcoxie as a harvester. He also drove a truck of Coca-Cola. Gary later enlisted in the United States National Guard. He was later honorably discharged.

Gary moved to Parsons where he worked for the Katy Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor from 1968 until his retirement in 2003. He moved to Chanute in 1996 and back to Parsons earlier this year.

He and Patty Miller were married in 1967 at Joplin. He later married Carolyn Roper on November 24, 1996 at Chanute. She preceded him in death on March 18, 2016.

He enjoyed traveling extensively with his wife, Carolyn. They enjoyed going to shows in Branson. He loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He was also an avid collector of railroad memorabilia. Gary was a faithful member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Chanute and the United Transportation Union.

He is survived by two sons, Hobie Block and his wife, Brenda, Kansas City, Mo., and Charles Block and his wife, Lori, Dodge City; two daughters, Heather Block and her companion Steve. Parsons, and Sarah Marshall and her husband, Roy, McCune; his stepson, Dr. Scott Coates and his wife, Robynn, Chanute; stepdaughter, Jaena Greenwood and her husband, Greg, Topeka; 14 grandchildren, Gannon, Elisah, Charles, Emily, Carmen, Brooke, Mitchell, Brian, Ashley, Austin, Ethan, Nathan, Nicholas, Jaylen; three great-grandchildren, Mckayla, Mckinlee, and Stephen; his stepgrandchildren, Sophia, Isabella, Erin, Garrett, and Ryan. In addition to his wife, Carolyn, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Parsons with Pastor Dan Ramsey officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the Sarcoxie Cemetery where he will be buried with his wife. The family will receive friends at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8 Tuesday evening.
