Major League Baseball Player. Born James Henry Landis, he played the center fielder position for six Major League Baseball teams (Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, and Boston Red Sox) during an eleven year (1957-1967) career. He attended Richmond (Ca.) High School and Contra Costa (Ca.) College before signing with the Chicago White Sox in 1952 as an amateur free agent. He served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1955 and was stationed in Alaska. He began his professional career with the White Sox in 1957 and went on to play for them for the next eight seasons. While with the White Sox, he was a two time All-Star and five time Gold Glove Award winner. He also was an integral part of the 1959 "Go-Go White Sox" team that won the American League pennant. He led the American League with a .993 fielding average in 1963. He was traded to the Kansas City Athletics on January 20, 1965 and played for them for one season before joining the Cleveland Indians for the 1966 season. In 1967 he was a member of three different teams (Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, and the Boston Red Sox) and retired after the season. His career batting statistics included 93 home runs, 467 runs batted in, 139 stolen bases, and a .247 batting average. After leaving baseball, he went into the safety sign business for several years and also coached Babe Ruth League baseball. In 2000 he was one of twenty-seven players named by the White Sox to their All-Century Team.
