At 1129 hours on 4 November 1944 Lancaster HK689 took off from Witchford detailed to bomb Solingen, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. A Missing Research & Enquiry team reported "The aircraft crashed near Wermelskirchen on 4 November 1944, which is located approximately 18 miles south east of Dusseldorf." Six of the crew members were killed and one was taken prisoner.
