While still in college, he met his beloved wife, Alice (n. Klock) Allen from Carmel, New York and they married in 1963. He entered the Army in 1964, where he faithfully served his country for 22 years, including a tour with the 11th ACR in Vietnam. During his time in Service, he obtained his master's degree in Nuclear Physics from Tulane University in 1974.
Upon retirement, he moved to Huntsville in 1986 and was employed by Dynetics Inc., retiring in 2006. He spent his retirement years traveling and truly loved volunteering for the Botanical Garden Galaxy of Lights, Habitat for Humanity, Honor Flight, Good Shepherd Catholic Church Mission Committee, and The Miracle League bowling tournament. His true passion was golf.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Richard Allen, and his parents, Stanley and Ruth Allen.
