Mrs. Sara Louise Beatrice Smith Oliver, formerly of 2412 New Walkertown Road, passed Sunday, July 29, 2001, upon arrival at the Forsyth Medical Center. She was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem where she was a 1928 graduate of Columbian Heights High School and a 1932 graduate of Winston-Salem Teachers College. She furthered her education at North Carolina Central University and the University of Cincinnati. Mrs. Oliver was an elementary school teacher having taught in the Wilkesboro and Reidsville School systems and later retiring from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. In the community she was affiliated with many organizations including the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Retired School Personnel, AARP, NAACP, Winston-Salem State University Alumni chapter, City of Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Commission, National Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association and the Monday Morning Senior Citizens. She was also an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church until her health failed and also Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the family plot at the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. Mrs. Oliver is survived by her spouse, Herbert Bernard Oliver Sr. of Stafford, Va.; a daughter, Adrian Oliver (James Robert) Wood of Stafford; a son Herbert B. (Millicent) Oliver Jr. of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, Justin Bernard Oliver of Richmond, Cordell R. Cahill Jr. of Stafford, Kip L. (Betty) Wood of King George, Va., Morganai K. Kelly of Woodbridge, Va., and Ken L. Wood of Stafford; a brother, Hugh N. Smith Sr. of Winston-Salem; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family may be contacted at the home of her brother, Hugh N. Smith Sr., 2418 New Walkertown Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Winston-Salem State University's Athletic Department. (Hooper)
