Joseph is a son of Peter Jensen Syndergaard and Ane Catrine Andersen. His parents were Danish immigrants. There were six children in the family: Annie Catherin, Caroline, Oley Peter, Joseph Peter, John Henry, and Wilford.
Joseph married Lillian Mae Bunce on April 12, 1905 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. They became parents to six children: Joseph Lavern, Virgil Dee, Enna Catherine, Louise May, Ina Almira, and Calvin Burdell.
After their early years in Sanpete and Carbon counties, the family moved to Salt Lake. Joseph registered for the World War I draft in September 1918. At that time he was 36 years old and had a wife and four children dependent on him. He was farming in the Mt. Pleasant area of Sanpete County. He is described as tall, slender, with blue eyes and brown hair.
Joseph died at age 75 from a myocardial infarction brought on by emphysema.
