Donald Gene Waters, 81, of Albion, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2017, at Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Omaha.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion with Reverend David Frerichs officiating. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post #162 of Albion, NE. A private family interment will be at a later date at Valley View Cemetery in Genoa. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, October 6th at the church. Palmer-Santin Funeral Home in Fullerton is in charge of the arrangements.

Donald was born July 31, 1936 to Frank and Anna Louise (Jacobson) Waters in Monroe. He was baptized and confirmed at United Methodist Church in Genoa. He was also a member of the Boy Scouts. He attended Genoa Public Schools and graduated in 1954. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army immediately after and was honorably discharged in October 1956. He moved to Huntington Park, CA where he was employed at the Lincoln-Mercury plant. He married Sharon M.J. Smith of Genoa at Augustana Lutheran Church in Genoa on June 30, 1957. They resided in Huntington Park, CA and had two sons, David Lee and Dwayne Gene. He attended night school at L.A. Trade Tech obtaining an Associate of Arts Degree in 1962. He then went into sales and estimating for different forging companies. In 1989, they moved to Reno, NV. He retired in August 2001 from Firth Rixson in Verdi, NV. In 2007, they moved to Albion.

He was active in Indian Guides with his sons and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, square dancing, and golf. They enjoyed traveling and took about 10 cruises over the years. They also took a lot bus trips with the local senior groups.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Albion; son, Dwayne of Valley Village, CA; sister, Marilyn Boyette (Jim) Roberts of Palm Desert, CA; sisters-in-law, Shirley Strain of Genoa and Patricia Tobiason of Columbus; brother-in-law, Richard (Rosalee) Smith of Genoa; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, David; still-born son, Darwin; and baby daughter, Donna.
