Gilbert was born on March 22, 1924 in Bienville, Arkansas. He attended school and enlisted into the United States Army on September 1, 1943. He was a member of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church where he was elected as trustee.
He was a self-employed laborer and was a jack of all trades. He married to Monteen Wiley Davis on April 7, 1950 who passed into the Lord's embrace on December 9, 2004. They had been married for 55 years.
He was great man, who would give the shirt off of his back. Although his absence leaves a void; his memory will linger.
He leaves his children: Lillie Cunningham of Gurdon, AR; his god son, Fred Hatley of Gurdon, AR; Laverene Mitchell of Prescott, AR, Yumika (John) Kingdom of Arkadelphia, AR, Kevin (Crystal Scales) Stevens of Gurdon, AR and Latasha Bryant of Arkadelphia, AR; fifteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He also leaves Marie Hart of Arkadelphia, Quinn Burkes and Wayne (Tina) Davenport of McKinney, TX who were raised as his sisters and brother and a host of cousins.
