CHARLESTON -- Boyd Pershing Bridges, 92, of Charleston, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2015 at his sons’ home, surrounded by family.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home. His memorial service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Memorials in his honor may be made to Paul McVey V.F.W. Post #1592.

Boyd was born November 11, 1922 at Trowbridge, Illinois, son of Boyd and Leota (Cox) Bridges. He married Erna Engel, September 3, 1949 at the First Christian Church, Mattoon. Surviving is his wife of more than 65 years, Erna; two sons: Larry Bridges and David (Melody) Bridges, both of Charleston; grandchildren: Derek (Kim) Bridges of Charleston, Brooks (Anita) Bridges of Sacramento, CA, J.R. Boyce and significant other Melissa Storm of Lerna, and Tricia Boyce of Charleston; great-grandchildren: Geniffer Bridges, Adrianna Bridges, Kira Bridges, Jaxon Boyce, and Jace Boyce; siblings: Emma Sanders of Mattoon, Jeanne Ferguson of Mattoon, James (Barbara) Bridges of Windsor, and Ann (George) Terry of Abingdon, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother: Verl Bridges, and daughter-in-law: Terry Bridges.

Boyd was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He held memberships at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Mattoon and Paul McVey V.F.W. Post #1592. Boyd worked at Kressge’s for nine years and retired from Anamet, where he had worked in production control. He loved tinkering on anything, sometimes just to see how it worked. Boyd loved to read, but his two favorite topics were cars and military history.
