Walter E. Lang passed away on May 4, 2017, with his family by his side. He was 78 years old. His wife Peggy Lang and two children, Wally and Tisha, survive him. In addition, survivors include his brother, Edward Kiss of New York, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one aunt, and several cousins.
Walter Lang was born in Manhattan, New York to the late Mary Marchak Kiss and Edward Lang. He honorably served his country by enlisting in the Marine Corps. Walter was a proud marine and lived his life doing what he loved best. His favorite story to share was the one where he spent five months at sea during a deployment to the Mediterranean coast. His determination, grit, discipline, and love for the country will be fondly remembered. Most of all, driving was his passion and he enjoyed every minute of it. One of his lifelong dreams was to retire and live out the rest of his life driving a fancy RV all over America, enjoying life on the road, as he liked to describe it.
After the Marines, he worked at Giant Foods driving a big rig for 37 yrs. He was passionate about all kinds of automobiles, with a soft spot for Mack trucks. He was a member of the American Legion, The American Truck Historical Society (Mason Dixon Chapter), and the Loyal Order of Moose.
As his colleagues would attest, it would be hard to find a more competent, loyal, honest, and punctual driver as Walt. People he worked with were his second family and he bonded with all of them in a very special way. Over twenty years ago, he encouraged a colleague and fellow Teamster to fight for equal pay and she won the battle. Even after all these years she remembered how he helped her by stressing the importance of not giving up.
People everywhere remembered Walter for his larger than life and outgoing personality. Everywhere you went you ran into somebody that recognized him. He was very proud of his reputation and always helped a neighbor in need. Famous for his generosity, most people knew that he never said no. Even if he had to wake up at 4 am to give someone a ride, he would alter his own schedule to help others out. Above all, he loved and cherished his wife and children, but truly treasured his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nothing put a smile on his face more than family gatherings, watching westerns, going to Sunday mass and filling in as an usher at St. Mary’s church in Annapolis.
Per his request, he has been cremated. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be at the chapel in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Crownsville, 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd, Crownsville, MD 21032 on Monday, May 15, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. with military honors accorded by the U.S. Marine Corps honor guard. Family and friends are welcome.
