Lloyd JoAnn King was born in Los Angeles, CA, December 24th, 1929, to Dorothy Lloyd and Ray Kerst, and died on September 11, 2017. She attended Dorsey High School and graduated from Eagle Rock High School, obtained an A.A. from Los Angeles City College and a B.A. from Cal State Los Angeles. She was married September 15th, 1950, to Larry King and they have celebrated 67 years in a most happy marriage.
She taught second grade for one year in Long Beach, CA, before traveling to the Philippines to join her Navy Electronics husband for two years on a small Naval Radio base near Manila. While there, she taught first grade in Pasay City.
In 1954, when her husband got out of the Navy, they returned home. Later that year the couple moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and soon bought a house in Ypsilanti. Larry earned his B.S. in Physics at the University of Michigan, and Lloyd taught second grade in the Willow Run School District for one year, general music for two years and then instrumental music district-wide for two years. She also earned an M.A. in Music Education from Eastern Michigan University in 1959.
They moved to Thousand Oaks, California, in 1961 with their two-year-old daughter, Kathy. Their son, Kevin soon joined them. Lloyd worked for one year as Director of Christian Education in the Methodist church, and she and Larry had a music store for their last five years there. She was always active as a volunteer in the communities in which she lived, particularly in music activities.
The family moved to Roseburg in 1974. Lloyd served on the Umpqua Valley Arts Association Board in the late 1970s, many years on the Umpqua Symphony Board and the Community Concert Board. In the Presbyterian Church, she served as an Elder and Clerk of Session. She was also active in AAUW, P.E.O. and the Oregon Music Teachers Association. She had several string and piano students. She played the string bass in community orchestras for over 50 years, and cello in a number of ensembles. Her hobbies included genealogy, theosophy, bridge, stamp collecting, music and travel. She also enjoyed a book group for many years.
During her lifetime, Lloyd received multiple honors, including 1968 First Citizen (Woman of the Year), Honorary Life P.T.A. and AAUW Named Gift honoree. She was also Volunteer of the month in 1984, and Zonta Woman of the Year in 1994-95. She was excited to be included in the 2003 Whos Who in America.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Konrad Kerst.
She is survived by her husband, Larry; daughter, Kathy Scott; son, Kevin King (Samantha); grandchildren, Marlana Potter (Jason), Devin Scott, Mason Robinson King; and great-grandchildren, Shayne Gibbons, Jasmyne Gibbons and James Scott.
The memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church, 823 SE Lane Avenue, in Roseburg.
