Son of William Samuel Mayhew and Mary Ann (nee Keech). He was baptised as Sidney James Mayhew at All Saints, Kempston, on 15 November 1891. Before the war he was a bricklayer's labourer. He stood 5'9" tall, and was physically well developed. He enlisted at Bedford on 7 June 1915, and served in the army for 302 days. He was in England from 7 June to 21 November 1915, and then was sent out with the British Expeditionary Force from 22 November 1915 to 28 April 1916. He was then deployed to Egypt where he served from 29 April 1916. He received a gun shot wound to the head on 27 March 1917, and he died of his wounds on 4 April. The spelling of his name varies - sometimes Sidney, sometimes Sydney. He is remembered on his parents' gravestone in Kempston Cemetery, Bedford.
