TWIN FALLS — On Thursday, September 28th this earth lost one of its dearest ladies with the passing of Joyce Ruth Gifford of Twin Falls, Idaho. Her life was a life of serving others, always remembering what was special to them and then doing all within her power to help make their lives special. She died peacefully at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Hospital surrounded by her loved ones.

Joyce was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 22, 1927 to Walter Sheldon Lewis and Evelyn Marquerite Rahn Lewis. She is survived by her brother, Walter Sheldon Lewis III, who resides in Illinois.

At the beginning on the 2nd World War she was taking a train from Denver to Minneapolis when she met her future husband William Arthur Gifford. He was being shipped out to New York with his troop and the conductor asked Joyce to share or allow soldiers to have her seat. They wrote to each other all during the war and when Bill came home they were married June 29, 1946, and she moved from the huge city of Minneapolis to a tiny town in Idaho called Montour where Bill lived. Her mother was so afraid that she would never see her again as she was certain that her daughter was moving to the Wild West!

Joyce was always active and loved roller skating and ice skating. She was the lead clarinetist in her high school band. None of which prepared her for life in the wilds of Idaho! She learned to wash clothes on a scrub board, carry water from a stream, use an outhouse, kill snakes with the butt of her husband’s rifle, and skin whatever Bill managed to bring home for them to eat.

Joyce and Bill were blessed with four children: three daughters, Billie Joy (Rich) Myers of Buckley, WA.; Linda (John) St. Clair of North Salt Lake, UT; Mae Ann Haga of Twin Falls and one “favorite” son David (Connie) Gifford of Acworth, GA: 21 grandchildren: 52 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter!

She was preceded in death by her parents and her eternal sweetheart and one grandson!

When Bill died in 1993, Joyce moved from Mountain Home to Twin Falls where she lived on her own until she passed away! For years people here in Twin Falls knew Joyce for her little red car and the awesome baked cookies she would share at a moment’s notice!

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and endured to the end knowing that life did not end with this life, but that it would go on throughout the eternities with those that she loved.

Life for those who knew Joyce will never be as sweet as it was with her in it! Just knowing that you were one of those whom she loved and prayed for made a person feel special – feel loved!

Funeral services for Joyce will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the 12th Ward LDS Church, 1134 North College Road West, Twin Falls. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Mountain View Cemetery in Mountain Home, Idaho. A viewing for family and friends will take place on Friday evening, October 6, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Reynolds Funeral Chapel, 2466 Addison Ave. East, Twin Falls as well as on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the LDS church.
