Howard M. Benson Jr., 90, of Hatfield and formerly from New Jersey, passed July 31, 2011 at Abington Health-Lansdale Hospital.

Born in New Jersey, he was the son of the late Howard and Elizabeth (Johnson) Benson. Mr. Benson was preceded in death by his first wife, Jacquelyn (McKinney) Benson; his second wife, Eva (Jones) Benson; two sisters; and a brother.

He was a highly decorated Staff Sergeant in the US Army in WWII and proudly served with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion (105mm) 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division* "Old Hickory". Howard was awarded 5 Bronze Star Medals, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Medal (five battle stars),the WWII Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation/ Germany Medal, the US Meritorious Unit Commendation* (France) Croix DeGuerre, Unit Citation* (Belgium) Fourragere Unit Citation.

He was employed by Lehigh Valley Dairies as a tractor trailer driver for over 35 years.

He was an avid camper and traveled to many of the states on different camping excursions. He also enjoyed roller skating and square and round dancing. He loved spending time and helping children.

Howard has a surviving spouse, Laura Benson, and a brother, Charles Benson, of Southampton.

He has been a devoted father to his two surviving daughters, Judy LaSpino of Lansdale and Sandra Krout-Nice of Auburndale, FL. He has four surviving grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements and military honors will be held in the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.
