Suggested edit: Melvin F. Wood (9/26/1934 - 8/4/2017,) 82, of Rockford, passed away at his home Friday August 4, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. Mel and his identical twin brother Maurice, were born to the late Lyle and Faye (Calkins) Wood on September 26, 1934, in Rockford, MI. Mel graduated from Rockford High School in 1953 where he played football, ran track and met his life long love, Beverly Powell whom he married in 1955. He served 2 years in the Army and was an initial volunteer with the Rockford Ambulance. Mel enjoyed spending time with family and friends both in Michigan and Florida. He loved fishing and playing cards but always found time to donate blood. He was only 1 pint shy of having donated 40 gallons and was honored by Michigan Blood as the top male donor of 2015. He was the only grandfather to many of his grandchildren and will be remembered for teasing them, buying them shoes and giving them candy. He was preceded in death by his son, Baby Mark, his twin Maurice, brother Don and sister Louise Wood. He is survived by his wife Beverly, children Debra Napieralski, her husband Tom Hoekwater, Renee and Bob English and Doug Wood, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren with another on the way, many nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Marilyn Powell, Denny and Nita Powell, Nancy Wood and Fran O'Conner. Relatives and friends may greet Mel's family on Tuesday August 8, 2017 from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 at Pederson Funeral Home, 127 N. Monroe St., Rockford. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday August 9, 2017 at Rockford United Methodist Church, 159 Maple Street with visitation at the church 1 hour prior. Military honors and burial will take place at Rockford Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the church. Memorial contributions to "National Parkinson's Foundation" may be considered.
