Jimmy Edward Byrd, age 70 of Oneonta, passed peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at his home in the Tait’s Gap Community surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. Jimmy was a wonderful father and friend to all that knew him. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict receiving several honors such as National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Marksman (Rifle), Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Air Medal.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Byrd; uncles, Lossie and Eugene Byrd; aunt, Peggy Byrd.

He is survived by his children, Jimmy Ray Byrd (Crystal), Michael Andrew Byrd and Carolyn Byrd Moore (Danny); grandchildren, Dalton Lynn (Holly) Gilliland, Derek Lee Gilliland, Christopher Ray Byrd, Jacob Andrew Byrd, and Emily Grace Byrd; one great grandchild, Waylon Hayes Gilliland; sister, Patty Curry (Bill).

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Lemley Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Tidwell Cemetery. Bro. Jeremy Thompson will officiate the services. Visitation for Mr. Byrd will be held on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Lemley Funeral Home.
