John J. Valentine was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky in 1840.As a young man he learned all that he could about the stagecoach delivery service.In 1861,at the age of 21, he moved to California to try to gain more knowledege in the express business.From 1862-1866,he worked as a route agent for Wells Fargo & Company.Later,in 1867, he went to work for the company's headquarters in San Francisco.Valentine rose quickly within the company and by 1892,he became Wells Fargo's third President.
