She was the daughter of John L. and Pearl Lena (Crum) Hatfield.
Kay spent her younger years and attended school in Greenwood, Missouri. In 1962, after the death of her father, she moved to Pleasant Hill, Missouri to make her home with her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Kenneth Ponder.
On September 14, 1964, Kay was united in marriage with Melvin Byrd and they made their home in Pleasant Hill. Mr. Byrd preceded Kay in death on July 20, 2007 and Kay continued to make her home in Pleasant Hill.
Kay worked as a CNA in several care centers in the area including Pleasant Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center and Jefferson Health Care in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, before declining health forced her retirement.
In addition to her husband, Melvin, Kay was preceded in death by her parents, John L. and Pearl Lena Hatfield; one grandson, Coly L. Byrd; thirteen brothers and eleven sisters.
Kay is survived by one son, Lonnie Byrd and wife Candi of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; two daughters, Sharon McKinzie of Independence, Missouri, and Christina Fillmore and Kimberly of Independence, Missouri; one brother, Junior Busick and wife Judy of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; two sisters, Cleo Redfern of Mattoon, Illinois, and Dorothy Ponder of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; seven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.
Cremation has been accorded and the family will host a Memorial Service 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2017, at the Family Worship Center, 1210 N. State Route 7, Pleasant Hill, Missouri.
