Joe proudly served in the United States Air Force during WWII, 432nd Bomb Squad 17th Bomb group. He was a farmer, an employee of the State Highway Dept. and retired from Ben Williamson of Ashland. He was a charter member of the Smith Branch Enterprise Baptist Church where he served as deacon and clerk.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Lorene Whitt Ward; a sister-in-law, Mary L. Griffith; four nephews, Ercel Rice, Everett Rice, Eddie Roberts, and Dennis Whitt; six nieces, Rosa Green, Joy Hamilton, Beverly Nangle, Linda Bush, Shirley Bowling, and Janie Salmon; and a host of extended family, friends and neighbors.
The family would like to give a special thank you to his exceptional care givers, Patty Lester, Becky Burton, Diane Lewis, Carol Damron and Dorothy Harlow, his comfort keepers, Ann Duncan and Lori Hall and Community Hospice of Ashland.
Funeral services will be Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sparks Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery following military rites by the Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Visitation will be Saturday, September 30, 12:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
