THOMASTON - Lafayette "Laf" French, 89, died at his home after a long illness with his wife at his side.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, February 1, 1918, he was a son of Lafayette, Jr. and Mabel Kaufmann French. Growing up in Austin, Minnesota, he was educated in local schools and was a 1935 graduate of Austin High School.

He was a 1939 graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, MN. That same year he entered the United States Air Force and, during World War II served as a pilot in the Pacific Theater. He continued flying as a pilot during the Korean War.

Following retirement from the Air Force in 1970, he moved to Thomaston. Since that time, Laf remained active in his community as a charter member of the Thomaston Volunteer Ambulance Service; a member of the Thomaston Board of Selectmen, Thomaston Library Board of Trustees, Thomaston Academy Board of Trustees and Thomaston 4th of July Committee. For several years he was manager of Montpelier.

He was an active member of the Thomaston Baptist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was a long time supporter of Knox County Democrats. Mr. French was predeceased by a sister Janet French Holcomb.

He is survived by his wife Tacy L. French; his daughter Tacy T. Ranney both of Thomaston; three grandchildren Stephen E., Wilson L. and Walker S. Ranney all of Thomaston; as well as three nephews, Stephen, Jonathan and Gregory Holcomb. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, August 17th, at the Thomaston Baptist Church, Main Street. The Reverend Wayne Sawyer will officiate.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Thomaston Baptist Church, 212 Main Street, or Thomaston Ambulance Service, c/o P. O. Box 299, Thomaston, Maine 04861. Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, Rockland.
