Service In 3 Wars
LT.-COL. JAMES NORMAN CRAWFORD of Rothie and Badenscoth, who has died in Aberdeen, gave service in three wars In South Africa and the last war he fought as a soldier, and in this war he served in the Royal Observer Corps. The son of the late Col. Henry Crawford, of the Inniskilling Fusiliers, he was born into the regiment in Dublin and joined it in 1896 from the Militia. The family tradition the Inniskilling Fusiliers is being carried on this war Lt.-Col Crawford’s two sons. Lt.-Col. Crawford was wounded in the South African War, and after service in China India and Crete he went with the regiment to France in the last war. Twice wounded, he won the D.S O. and was mentioned in dispatches. He was taken prisoner in March. 1918. He commanded both battalions of the regiment while in France. On his return from captivity in Germany, Lt.-Col. Crawford took his regiment to India, retiring in 1923 on completing his tenure of command. Returning to this country, he took residence in Aberdeenshire, where in 1916 he succeeded to the estates of Rothie and Badenscoth on the death of his brother He held the rank of Group Officer in the Observer Corps for three years. Sixty-nine years, of age, Lt.-Col. Crawford is survived by his wife and his two sons —Lts. N. J. Crawford and H. N. Crawford.
